Feb 28 – Tim Talbott: “Making a More Perfect Union”– The soldiers who made up the United States Colored Troops regiments that fought at the Battle of New Market Heights came from both free and enslaved backgrounds, hailed from many different states, and held a diverse array of occupations before enlisting. Those soldiers who were wounded or died in the battle left a lasting legacy of service and sacrifice to the United States, while others who survived went on to lead amazing lives after the Civil War. In his presentation “Making a More Perfect Union,” historian Tim Talbott will share the life stories of a number of these men, including some of the 14 Black soldiers who received the Medal of Honor for their courageous actions during the Battle of New Market Heights.
