2017 Recipient Emily R Crawford

At our January 25, 2017, Civil War Round Table of Fredericksburg meeting, John Hennessy, Chief Historian with the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Park, made a presentation on the NPS Internship Program to our members. At the end of his presentation, club members asked questions concerning the details and the club resolved to partner with the National Park Service to sponsor an intern for the sum of $1,500 per internship. Members Fred and Tanya Howe graciously offered to pay one-half of this sum and the club accepted. Special thanks again to Fred and Tanya Howe for their generosity.

Emily R. Crawford was assigned by Greg Mertz, Supervisory Historian with the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, to the internship sponsored by Civil War Round Table of Fredericksburg. Emily is from Johnson City, Tennessee, and will graduate from East Tennessee State University in December 2017. She is a history major who aspires to become a professional historical interpreter at either a state or national park.

Emily attended the May 24, 2017, meeting where she was enthusiastically welcomed by our members. She addressed the round table, expressing her excitement about being the first Civil War Round Table of Fredericksburg Honorary Albert Z. Conner Internship recipient and her sincere appreciation to the club. President Paul Scott had the pleasure of presenting Emily with Al Conner's book, "Seizing Destiny," as a gift from the club.

Emily concluded her assignment with the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park in August 2017. She returned home and graduated from East Tennessee State University on December 16, 2017. In the Spring of 2018 Emily interned at Manassas National Battlefield Park to help with their children programs. She has recently returned for a seasonal position at Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park. She will be working between Fredericksburg, Wilderness and Chancellorsville Visitor Centers.

In May, Emily joined the Civil War Round Table of Fredericksburg in congratulating our 2018 Honorary Albert Z. Conner Internship recipient Thomas Ritz.

We wish Emily all the best in her future endeavors.
