Mar 28 – Scott Boyd: “The Ongoing Mysteries of the Confederate Submarine H. L. Hunley” – 161 years ago, the wooden steam sloop USS Housatonic, on blockade duty at the mouth of Charleston harbor, mysteriously sank following a large explosion near her stern on the evening of February 17, 1864. This turned out to be the first warship lost in action due to a submarine, in this case, the Confederate H. L. Hunley. The Hunley never returned to base, marking the start of a decades-long search for the now-famous boat. Finally located in 1995, and recovered intact in 2000, the 40-foot Hunley has been undergoing painstaking conservation and study ever since, slowly yielding some of her secrets… but not all. The basic question of why she did not return to base after the successful attack on the Housatonic remains unanswered, despite several interesting theories proposed to explain it. This presentation will discuss the latest findings

Location: Lower Level of the Lake of the Woods Clubhouse
