HELL BY THE ACRE: A Narrative History of the Stones River Campaign – November 1862 – January 1863 On the day after Christmas, 1862, General William S. Rosecrans moved his Army of the Cumberland southeast of Nashville to Murfreesboro, met General Braxton Braggs Army of Tennessee, and fought one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the Civil War. The full campaign, with extensive new source material, is the subject of Daniel Master’s presentation. It is replete with acts of courage, suffering beyond limits of human endurance, near victory and near defeat, and subsequent withdrawal and recriminations.
