Fresh from their victory over the Army of the Cumberland at the battle of Chickamauga (Sept 18-20, 1863), there were high expectations for a quick and decisive victory following that battle. However, internal squabbling between Confederate General Braxton Bragg and his generals proved disruptive. Once U.S. Grant arrived on the scene in mid-October and additional U.S. troops arrived in Chattanooga, the decisive victory once quickly expected proved outright illusive.
