Battlefield Parks:

The National Park Service has a tremendous amount of current local information on the Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness and Spotsylvania Courthouse Battlefields.

Stafford Civil War Park is the site of 1863 winter encampments and fortifications of the Union Army’s 11th Corps, 1st and 3rd Divisions, following the December 1862 Battle of Fredericksburg. Many of the soldiers referred to the site and that winter, then and afterwards, as their “Valley Forge.” Over 3,500 soldiers died throughout Stafford County during that winter. Situated on 41 acres, park visitors can see and learn about Civil War era battery and winter hut site remains, a corduroy road, a late 18th and early 19th century sandstone quarry, and remnants of the 1660s Potomac Church Road bed.

Museums:

The mission of the American Civil War Museum is to be the preeminent center for the exploration of the American Civil War and its legacies from multiple perspectives: Union and Confederate, enslaved and free African Americans, soldiers and civilians.

Current Regional Research:

American Civil War Then and Now The women who dug the graves, the kids who watched the largest battle in US history – and the slaves forced to help fighters at the front. 150 years after the last shots were fired, Guardian photographer David Levene travelled across the US photographing the sites scarred by the American civil war.

Emerging Civil War serves as a public history-oriented platform for sharing original scholarship related to the American Civil War. Primary audience is the general public, so scholarship is defined broadly: historical research, memory studies, travelogues, personal narratives, essays, book reviews, and photography. Journalistic-style coverage of current Civil War-related events and the Civil War in pop culture are also included.

Library of Congress is the largest library in the world which includes books, recordings, photographs, newspapers, and maps on the Civil War in its collections.

Virginia Memory is part of the online presence of the Library of Virginia, the state archives and reference library. The Library maintains vast and varied collections of print materials, manuscripts, archival records, newspapers, photographs and ephemera, maps and atlases, rare books, and fine art that tell the history of the commonwealth and its people.

Battlefield Preservation:

The Central Virginia Battlefields Trust (CVBT) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of sacred, historic battlefields in Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, the Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House areas. Incorporated in 1996, CVBT has helped preserve more than 1,200 acres of historic battlefield terrain, adopting our motto, "Dirt and Grass."

In addition to purchasing land, the CVBT mission includes advocacy for battlefield preservation. They work constructively with local governments in the spirit of mutual benefit and cooperation. They are proud of the positive partnerships cultivated with landowners, preservation organizations, and local governments over the years.

Central Virginia Battlefields Trust remains proactive, with several ongoing battlefield preservation projects and negotiations, and with a continuing focus on, and commitment to, their mission of battlefield preservation.

The American Battlefield Trust is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization devoted to the preservation of America’s hallowed battlegrounds. Although primarily focused on the protection of Civil War battlefields, the Trust also seeks to save the battlefields connected to the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Through educational programs and heritage tourism initiatives, the Trust seeks to inform the public about the vital role these battlefields played in determining the course of our nation’s history.
