2023 Recipient Shebly Gibson
Shelby Gibson is from Seymour, Tennessee. She graduated from Walters State Community College in May 2022 with an Associate Degree in Musical Theatre. She has enjoyed learning about history since childhood and first gained an interest in the US Civil War through watching Ken Burns’ documentary “The Civil War” in 8th grade US History. Through her research, she has developed a passion for studying the aftermath of the Civil War and the challenges veterans faced after they returned home, how the Civil War affected Americans views on mortality, as well as the life stories of individuals such as Dr. Mary Edwards Walker and Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Shelby is excited to return to Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park in 2024 as a seasonal park guide.
